We all know the usual suspects when considering a new pet for the family. Typically, a person’s biggest decision is whether to get a puppy or kitten versus an adult dog or cat. While there are certainly pros and cons to each, adopting a bunny or rabbit rarely even crosses the minds of most. But did you know bunnies offer remarkably similar benefits to their more popular counterparts? In some cases, they may even be the better animal for your situation.
.) Rabbits help improve our physical and mental health: Rabbits make excellent companions. They are gentle and calm creatures, and when we pet them, it can decrease our cortisol levels. In turn, this reduces our stress. At the same time, snuggles from a little bun-bun increase our serotonin levels making us feel content and happy.
.) Bunnies are low-maintenance and inexpensive to care for: 5:00 a.m. walks can be the worst, especially in winter. It’s cold and dark, and the last thing you want to do is leave the comfort of your warm bed to take Fido out to use the bathroom. But, with Thumper as your companion, there is no walking involved, making them great apartment pets. Not only that, but rabbits eat relatively little, so they don’t run up a huge food bill each month.
.) They offer the best of both worlds: Are you a dog person, and your significant other prefers cats? Well, with rabbits, you can have it all. Bunnies are silly and loyal like dogs, curious and independent like cats. They like to play in the mornings and evenings and chill out during the day – ideal for those who work 9 to 5, whether at home or an office.
.) Rabbits are adaptive and have high intelligence: There’s a reason Elmer Fudd called Bugs Bunny a wascally wabbit. Rabbits are known to be highly adaptable and intelligent. They can learn basic commands and be trained to use the litter box!
.) Bunnies are quiet (it’s highly unlikely they’ll destroy your personal property): Remember the struggles of training a puppy or kitty? When they’re babies, dogs love to chew anything they can get their paws on, while cats use their kitty claws to scratch just about every surface they can find – except for the expensive scratching post you bought. With bunnies, there’s no mess, just a little fluff.
