After a witness alerted Surprise Police to the situation, they discovered 10 puppies and two adult dogs in an apartment and now, the owner is facing nearly a dozen charges of animal cruelty, including one felony count. Detectives discovered it was not a one-time incident with the owner stating that he put the zip tie around her mouth to prevent her from barking after having received complaints.
The family of Basset Hounds were transferred to the Arizona Humane Society’s trauma hospital where they were examined further. They have remained in AHS’ care and being doted on by AHS’ staff ever since. Now, nearly three weeks later, the family is ready for adoption. Due to the outpouring of support for these puppies and their parents, AHS will host a drawing for their adoptions.

Each year, AHS takes in nearly 16,000 of the Valley’s most vulnerable pets and partners with 12 law enforcement agencies on suspected cases of animal cruelty. Last year alone, AHS’ Animal Cruelty Investigators assisted on nearly 7,000 suspected cases of animal cruelty. Our work would not be possible without the eyes and ears of those in our community, as well as the agencies we partner with. If you suspect animal cruelty in your community, please contact your local law enforcement agency or AHS’ Field Dispatch Team at 602.997.7585 Ext. 2073.
For those who are interested in making a difference in the life of a homeless pet, but are not in a position to adopt, please consider volunteering (one-time opps available now!), fostering or donating today.
